Spanish Wine Review (video): Amizade Mencía 2010

October 2, 2013

Another Spanish wine from one of my favorite grapes, Mencía. Wines from Mencía have a lot of personality but they are not always easy wines. Lately the NY Times had a somewhat disappointing tasting of Mencías from the Bierzo…they cited bitterness and lack of balance as negatives. I would have like to see the full list of the wines they tasted. Amizade 2010 is a collaboration between top Albariño producer Do Ferreiro and American wine importer De Maison Selections, and is from the northwestern appellation of Monterrei. I’ve already rated it’s sister white wine from Godello. The Mencía seems to be only available on the US market, not in Spain, and costs around 16-20$. For the full review see my video below.

Spanish Video Wine Review: Brezo Mencía 2010

Brezo Mencía 2010: earthy Spanish wine from the Bierzo region

I’ve had two cats named after my favorite grapes: Pinot Noir and Mencía…my cats are as full of character as these grapes! Mencía is a unique grape, full of personality, from the northwest of Spain, that at it’s best, has aromas of stone, earth and leaf. It’s not for the faint-hearted wine drinker, but rewards the adventurous. Some of my favorite Spanish wines are from Mencía but finding a good deal is increasingly hard as production can be tiny. The wine today is by star wine-maker Gregory Perez of Bodegas Mengoba the Bierzo region of Galicia. Mengoba Mencía has been one of my favorite Mencías for a long time and now we have the baby Mencía from Bodegas Mengoba: Brezo Mencía 2010. Check out my video review.

Wine rating: Pétalos del Bierzo 2006

February 14, 2009

Bierzo is a great wine area that I’ve written about several times.  It is home to the very high quality red grape Mencía as well as the excellent white grape Godello.  Mencía has become quite trendy and it’s harder to find good value these days.  Also I’ve noticed an interesting trend in my wine-tasting groups…Mencía […]
