Spanish Wine Review: Oloroso Bodegas Tradición 30yrs

Bodegas Tradicion Oloroso Sherry: Great Spanish wine

My second Spanish wine while back in Madrid (and here I’ll stop counting) had to be a sherry…and a spectacular one it was! Bodegas Tradición never disappoints with its small line of complex, aged sherries and the 30yr Oloroso was no exception. Though dry, the multi-layer, complex nutty, roasted and cocoa notes in this amazing wine made it a perfect ending with my coffee after a very rich meal. I love that this oxidized wine stays fresh for months after opening and can be enjoyed in small pours. Though not inexpensive at around 40€ or 75$, it is really great value…what other 30 year old wine can be enjoyed for this price?

Spanish wine: Great Spanish sherry in Fernando de Castilla Antique PX

Very excited to start video posts on Spanish wines…this is my first one! Riveting stuff! Enjoy it and laugh at my awkwardness! It will get better! I already mentioned this wine, the Fernando de Castilla Antique Pedro Ximenez, in my recent article about the wines of Sherry. In that article I talked about how what […]

Spanish Wine Review: Lustau Los Arcos Amontillado

Spanish wine: Lustau Los Arcos Amontillado Sherry

Some of my top Spanish wine experiences have been with sherries, but it’s also just as important to find the great value, every day sherries. The Lustau Los Arcos Amontillado is a delicious example of a great sherry to enjoy, sip and cook with. Once you start cooking with and trying sherry with food, you will never go back….it’s one of the most food friendly wines around. Amontillado is the perfect Sherry style for summer cooking and drinking. The tangier, edgier Fino style can be an acquired taste, while Oloroso has a winter feel to it. Amontillado, especially a really friendly, soft one like the Los Arcos is the perfect wine compromise. A complex, fresh, unique wine for only about 15$!

Sherry: the Spanish wine only a mother could love

Fernando de Castilla Antique PX: Spanish wine from the Sherry area

Talking with wine geek friends, so many of our top Spanish wine experiences, those exquisite wine moments, are from old and rare sherries. I’ve religiously dragged out my favorite bottles to every social event, served it at every one of my meals, trying to to convert my “normal” wine drinking friends and family. To no avail…I end up savoring and admiring it by myself…secretly a little happy because there’s more for me! Really though, it makes me sad…if I could just help them appreciate these wonderful wines. All these thoughts are running through my head tonight as I sip a real beauty, the Fernando de Castilla Antique Pedro Ximenez.

Madeira Series: Henriques & Henriques Sercial Verdelho, Bual

January 16, 2007

Madeira is a wonderful wine that is often misunderstood, certainly it is little known here in Spain. Whenever I am in Portugal, I try and stock up as it is very difficult to get much here. Recently, I was fortunate enough to taste a series of Madeiras from Henriques & Henriques, one of the top […]

Wine Rating: Sherry – Matusalem

January 14, 2007

My husband’s family loves a good dessert wine…so we break one out as often as possible. Often they are not Spanish ones, as the Spanish dessert wine scene can be limiting, but today we had one of our favourite sweet sherries. Pedro Ximenez (PX) is the typical sweet sherry that you see over here. PX […]
