Spanish Wine Review: Zestos Garnacha 2011

April 17, 2013
Zestos Garnacha 2011: Spanish wine from the Madrid region

Exciting Spanish wine day in Costco today…but more on that later! The one I had to open first was the Zestos Garnacha 2011 from the Madrid wine region, called Vinos de Madrid. This is an area often overlooked, even in Spain and there are some really exciting wines, wines with some really unique personality. Also Madrid is like home to me, so I always like to see it represent! To find a good Madrid wine in Costco, and at the ridiculously affordable price of 7 dollars, really made my day! This Zestos is amazing value, it’s such an attractive wine, and it gives a great glimpse of what Madrid producers are doing with their fantastic old vine Grenache vineyards.

Spanish Wine Review: Goliardo Espadeiro 2009

April 6, 2013
Goliardo Espadeiro 2009 Spanish wine

This is a grape variety you have probably never tried! Espadeiro, an almost extinct Galician varietal being revived slightly by a few dedicated producers. This area of Galicia, Rias Baixas, is most known for its white wines from the Albariño grape, but Bodegas Forjas del Salnés is gaining most fame for its intense, nervy reds from local varieties under the appealing moniker of “Tintos del Mar” or “Reds from the Sea.” The whole line is very impressive and the Espadeiro is no exception. This is a cool-climate red, lighter in alcohol, high in acidity, earthy , yet at the same time very aromatic. Perhaps not what you’d expect from Spanish wine, but these wines are part of a new wave of lighter, terroir-driven reds produced by young enologists determined to break free from the recent commercial trends.

Wine Review: L’Equilibrista 2009/2010

December 3, 2012
L'Equilibrista: a great Grenache/Syrah wine from Cataluña, Spain

This Catalan Grenache blend is delicious, food-friendly, easy to drink and really light on the pocket book! Two styles of Garnacha have dominate in Spain: big, bold, fruit bombs and lean, mineral, more austere styles. Both are delicious, but neither are for everyone. This wine walks the line beautifully between the styles; it offers friendly fruit, but with good freshness and some nice mineral notes. It feels like a big wine but doesn’t tire you out…read on for more…

LAN Crianza: Bright and Fruity Rioja at a Good Price

October 5, 2012

The retail mark ups on Spanish wines here in the US are so puzzling, some are so reasonable and others outrageous. Walking around a Total Wine store here in Florida yesterday, I was happy to see an old favorite at a very decent 13$ price point.

Wine rating: Predicador 2006/2007

March 25, 2009

I have been meaning to try this Rioja wine for some time and in the last week I have tried it in two vintages.  Both were impressive, but the 2007 could use a little more time in bottle to achieve a better balance.  Predicador is the inexpensive wine that Benjamin Romeo brought onto the market […]

Wine rating: Mestizaje 2006/2007

March 14, 2009

In the last two days I’ve had two different vintages of this juicy, big wine from the southern Spanish region of Utiel…the 2006, which is still widely available, and the 2007, which was just released about a month ago.  The 2006, which sis months ago was a little rough, was really delicious.  The 2007 is […]

Wine rating: Dominio de Atauta 2005

March 12, 2009

Dominio de Atauta is a really unique wine from the Spanish wine region of Ribera del Duero.  As mentioned in my ratings of Ferratus, I’m a bit down on the region.  The inexpensive wines from the region are often hollow and thin on fruit, the more expensive can often be over-oaked.  Also many of the […]

Wine rating: Mengoba 2007

March 11, 2009

Megoba 2007 is a very trendy red wine from Bierzo made from the outstanding Mencía grape.  It is so trendy that its price seems to have gone up 25% in its first year of release!  It’s a wine made by Gregory Pérez, the well known enologist that is behind the Luna Beberide winery.   He originally […]

Wine rating: Tejoneras Alta Selección 2005

February 17, 2009

Vinos de Madrid is an improving but still little known wine appellation within the province of Madrid, the small region surrounding the city of Madrid.  Traditionally it was known for joven or “young” red wines without any oak, wines that were often served in the bars in the capital.  There has been a tremendous effort […]

Wine rating: Pétalos del Bierzo 2006

February 14, 2009

Bierzo is a great wine area that I’ve written about several times.  It is home to the very high quality red grape Mencía as well as the excellent white grape Godello.  Mencía has become quite trendy and it’s harder to find good value these days.  Also I’ve noticed an interesting trend in my wine-tasting groups…Mencía […]
